The person who types the fastest isn't necessarily the "best," and the person who knows the most tech isn't always the one who saves the team. In fact, I see the opposite more often. Because with the arrival of AI, the role of the developer has visibly changed.<h3 style="font-size: 22px; font-weight: normal;">Code is No Longer Scarce</h3>Code itself is no longer a scarce resource. From simple functions to complex business logic, AI generates it in an instant. The question of "Do you know how to write this?" is losing meaning. At the very least, the era of judging ability solely by "writing capability" is coming to an end.Yet, within teams, we see the same scene repeated: There’s a developer who builds features quickly with AI, with high commit counts and fast velocity. But as time passes, their code keeps breaking. When someone tries to fix it, there’s no context, the structure is opaque, and eventually, others have to rip it apart and redo it.Conversely, there’s another developer whose total code output seems lower, but somehow, the parts they touch run stably for a long time. Even when there is an outage, they find the root cause quickly, and their code isn't easily shaken by changes. Now, that sense comes too late; we realize it only after a mountain of code has already been built.Great developers differentiate themselves here. Experience used to correlate directly with code proficiency. Now, thanks to AI, even juniors produce results quickly. They are uncomfortable passing over code they don't understand. This attitude is rarely visible; it doesn't show up in commit logs.
